We protect us?

A small news item from our southern neighbour. After the U.S. Federal Government cancelled and suspended several hundred million dollars in grants to University of California schools, a group of researchers sued the federal government; a district court judge has ordered the government to restore much of that funding. More recently, a coalition of faculty associations and employee unions has sued the federal government over its “attempt to unlawfully stifle free speech within the University of California (UC) system”. The plaintiffs in this second case are “labor unions and associations that collectively represent tens of thousands of faculty, students, academic employees, and staff employees throughout the University of California”.

Meanwhile, in Québec, the CAQ wants to make union dues optional if they are used to finance legal actions brought before the courts.
